New Mental Health resources available on West Slope
Mountain Democrat - 7/16/2017
Finding help for someone experiencing a mental health crisis can be difficult. It can also be a lofty task for a family member or friend seeking support for a loved one in need during times of crisis.
The West Slope of El Dorado County has a new educational resource to help direct people to local services: Mental Health Kiosks.
Each kiosk highlights educational materials on common mental illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder as well as local mental health services available. Brochures are updated regularly with some materials available in Spanish as well as English.
Many people when faced with a mental health condition in themselves or a loved one are often at a loss about what to do. These situations are often fraught with emotion and frequently misunderstood by friends and family. Mental health officials are hopeful these kiosks, with their array of specific and reliable information, will make it easier for the members of the community to overcome some of the fear and stigma and reach out for assistance.
The kiosks, designed and implemented in six South Lake Tahoe locations last year in partnership with Barton Health, have been embraced by the community. The latest kiosks for the West Slope are provided by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) El Dorado County, an advocacy and support network for families and people affected by mental illness, through a generous grant provided by the El Dorado Community Foundation.
The locations on the West Slope of El Dorado County include:
Folsom Lake College, El Dorado County ? Student Services
El Dorado County Library, Cameron Park
Marshall Hospital Emergency Department
El Dorado County Library, Georgetown
Shingle Springs Tribal Health ? Behavioral Health
Part of the grant includes tracking what brochures and pamphlets are used most frequently to provide insight into what issues community members want to know about and where people need more support. For more information go to namieldoradocounty.org .
