Baywater Animal Rescue to run for mental health

Dorchester Star - 5/11/2018

CAMBRIDGE - Baywater Animal Rescue is participating the 14th Annual Great Chesapeake Bay Wellness Race on Saturday, May 12, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort. The run benefits the Eastern Shore Hospital Center and aids in their efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

At Baywater Animal Rescue, the mental well-being of the animals in their care is a critical component in finding forever homes. The Foster Home Program helps reduce the stress animals experience while at shelter by allowing them to relax in a home setting. The foster families play a vital role in addressing behavioral issues, socialization and training.

"The Great Chesapeake Wellness Race is a great opportunity to take care of our staff and support the Eastern Shore Hospital Center as they raise awareness for good mental health," Jayme Schatz, operations manager and avid runner, said.

"We promote wellness for the animals in our care," Schatz said. "If we don't take care of our staff and volunteers in the same manner we won't be able to do an effective job." This is one of several runs that Jayme participates in across the Mid-Shore, with one of the dogs available for adoption frequently running along with her.

The two Baywater Animal Rescue registered teams are made up of staff, board members and volunteers running or walking while wearing their #teambaywater "Run with the Pack" T-shirts. Registration fees were donated by Tom Divilio, president of Baywater Animal Rescue Board of Directors.

Baywater Animal Rescue is the Eastern Shore's leading no-kill animal shelter. Serving Dorchester county for over 70 years, the shelter helps animals find their forever families as well as help the people of Dorchester County keep their pets in their homes through pet pantry and behavior counseling.

The shelter also provides low cost spay and neuter services to reduce the number of homeless animals. For more information, log onto www.baywateranimalrescue.org.
